Citrus Union, Galactic Trade Union, Lunar Mining and Operations, Supernova Foundries, and Highlander Shipyards have announced the formation of a new political alliance centered in Moria space.

Operating under the banner of the Moria Free Trade Alliance (MFTA), the coalition describes itself as the "pre-eminent political alliance in NEO Charter Exploration space," advocating an electoral platform centered on free trade, regional growth, low establishment fees, at-cost gate fees, and low to moderate taxes.

Alliance Responds to ICR Inquiry

Interstellar Commerce Review reached out to representatives of the newly founded organization for clarification on the announcement, and the events leading to the formalization of the new political bloc.

Political Bloc Forms in Response to Recent Crisis and Election Changes

Speaking to its foundation, the group cited the initial impetus as the recent controversies surrounding Promitor, specifically stating that "more care needs to be put into securing governments," and that the events directly led to "increased coordination" between the founding members, who already worked together on government and infrastructure matters.

The group also pointed to the recent changes to the election processes across APEX territories, noting that organizing under a common banner and coordinating candidates would be "prudent."

The Alliance differentiated itself from other political and economic blocs in Morian space, noting that all such groups operated at the corporation level, and that the "MFTA is an umbrella under which political operations can be coordinated while the member corporations retain full independence."

Alliance Advocates Member-Funded Regional Development

On the topic of its economic agenda, the MFTA noted that members already "personally fund" much of the region's development initiatives, and that such a strategy is a "much [more] preferable option" than those employed in other regions, where the taxes of more prosperous planets support the development of others.

MFTA Highlights Rise of 'Functional Governors'

With regards to elections, the group stated that it had "already coordinated to field slates...in most elections across Moria," and that some tickets include "...trusted non-MFTA candidates, such as Anxuiz on Montem and Adiklafa on Danakil and Libertas."

The MFTA also positioned itself as a "forum to deal with the new, less predictable election system," offering clarity where the "functional...and official governor may not be the same." Representatives argued that hidden vote totals and approval voting have made such arrangements increasingly common, creating a need for political organizations to communicate who is actually responsible for day-to-day governance.

When asked to expand on what was meant by "functional" and "official" governors, the group cited Saigo d (YI-280d) and Verdant (YI-715b) as examples, stating that the planets were effectively governed by CraftsmanThirteen and Vallen27 respectively, despite neither holding the formal governor seat within their parliaments.

The MFTA further clarified that the organization "facilitates coordination with shadow governors," pointing to Lekvarky as an example of someone performing administrative tasks, but not running for election.

Independent Candidates Still Welcome in MFTA Space

While the bloc conceded that such political coordination does "necessarily reduce political competition," it indicated that opportunities for independents still exist. The MFTA stated that it endorses "trusted independents" running for election in some races, explaining that such individuals are "people who, while not members of the MFTA, have demonstrated they are competent in governance," and therefore does not run opposition candidates.

Whether the alliance ultimately proves to be a defensive coalition against future political disruption, a vehicle for coordinated regional development, or the foundation of a lasting Morian political establishment remains to be seen. What is clear is that the MFTA represents one of the most significant efforts yet to formalize political cooperation across the region.
